Commuting is so underrated ! I’ve done them all! 4 hours in the car, 1 hour on a bike (bicycle 😉), 20-minute run with the added unending weirdness of showering, dressing and having breakfast at work; 30–60 mins on trains, trams and buses — even weekly and daily flights. In the same way one might ‘warm up’ before a football match or a concert: having headspace combined with the dynamism of journeying has an oddly vital alchemy to it. Maybe not as epic as an Odyssey or pilgramage of sorts, but, although tiny, there is a deeply human spark of something akin.
Biggest thing (personally) is to keep it fresh — change the mode of transport often, randomise the habits so it becomes a mindful, rather than mindless commute (although some days you need autopilot, right?).
Reading a book on a bus is obviously different to singing badly in the car with the windows down; to mindful cycling (although I’m v. fortunate and privileged to normally enjoy a full mile of fragrant curry houses, then speed-regulated, oak and ash tree-lined residential roads for the next 4!).
The uniquely creative novelty of the journey to work for many — yep! This is an observation that I can relate to.
I hope we don’t lose this experience entirely post-Covid, and I hope millions more are given the opportunity or choice to enjoy that personal time and space for these seemingly non-entity but potentially, highly pleasurable journeys as they get on with their days around the world.
Millions of teaspoons all hitting the saucer or the shallow belly of the drainboard after the last stir of a coffee, clinking and chiming 24/7… or millions of doors opening for the new day ahead.
Both sound good.
